A Felicity tea party

My last post over at the Homeschool Village I wrote about letting precious things go.  My big thing is my Great grandma’s tea set. 

It’s old cracked and missing several handles, but Princess has been dreaming of using it for years.  YEARS I tell you.  I mistakenly told her she could use it at 5, and she remembered.  OH DID SHE REMEMBER.  I’ve been asked almost every week since she turned 5 when she could use it.  Of course she always asked when it was a horrible time, at least in my mind.  During the Week of Girls, I finally stopped saying no.

So we ate lunch on them.  A healthy lunch of crackers, sausage, and cheese.  It’s a favorite here.  To make it “healthy” we add apples.  You know, a fruit.

 

How is this Felicity from American Girl Dolls?  We practiced our manners and called each other characters from the book.  I was Miss Manderlay.  Princess was Felicity.  Her friend was Elizabeth.

 

We also wore BEAUTIFUL one of a kind hand beaded jewelry.  I think I have a few beads left.  Seriously, they went through 3 tubs of them.

 

After, they “carefully” (and I nearly had a heart attack) cleaned the dishes, one at a time.

And then more jewelry was made.  Yes, Princess does live in this dress if I let her.  She does grudgingly remove it from time to time.  Like right now when I need to repair 2 seams.

God gives us what we can handle

I’ve heard that before.  I’ve certainly said that before.

Than my boys spent a week away at camp, and I spent a week with two girls.

They are both as sweet as can be.  They were fun to have, and I mostly enjoyed the change of pace.

I also discovered there is a reason God gave me the family I have.


Little girls have drama.


Little girls want advice on what shoes to wear, or what outfit looks cute.

When I first found out I was pregnant with twin boys, I said, “Really God, you sure do have a sense of humor.  That’s a lot of boy in the house.  Boys do not want cute little dresses.”

And then I had my boys, and I spent mornings sword fighting and playing super heroes.  Then I got my little Princess.  I spent the mornings having tea parties, and singing, and dancing.

I found out the week my boys were gone there’s a reason I have ONE girl.  I like one girl, that’s about the amount of girl drama I can handle.

I wouldn’t trade my kiddos for anything.  Black, black, no trade-backs.

Though I must say I was glad to get my boys back.

10 Random Things

I’m joining in with the iHN ladies for the first time this week.  I excell at random.

1.  I spent half of yesterday waiting for sonograms for Superman.  They were suspecting appendicitis.

2.  As soon as the sonogram technician was going to see him, he suddenly and miraculously felt better.  To the point of being ridiculously happy.

3.  Seven year olds do not like having to wait a long time to eat or drink.  He was a trooper.

4.  This is the third event for which Superman has needed a sonogram.  The first was for having a big head, 2millimeters bigger than his brother, and the second was for a hernia.

5.  I relearned yesterday ALWAYS bring a book with you.  I didn’t because I was just going to a friend’s house and then home.  I brought my sketch pad, but I finished the last picture for Solomon while sitting in the first round of waiting rooms.

6.  It’s amazing how tired you feel when a major event is over.  I felt rather quiescent yesterday waiting for news.

7.  Princess is convinced that I don’t like her as much as Superman because I spent all day with him while she had to go off with Mimi.  She’s feeling crazy tender, so I’m having a tea party with her today.  A very long one, maybe even cookies.

8.  I’ve come to the conclusion my Mom white-washed my past.  She says I was super easy to bring up, and that Princess is just like me.  She’s lying.  Princess is stubborn and emotional, and just like me.  There are times I think the two of us are going to kill each other, and then there are times I think I’ll spend a year crying when she moves out of the house.  I don’t know which one will win.

9.  I’m taking on a major ministry role at my church.  It is going to entail all sorts of things that are scary to me.  Like calling people, and recruiting.  On the other hand I get to write a whole new curriculum.

10.  I was looking forward to doing a bunch more sewing when I was done writing my current one.  I think that’s a few years out now.  I miss hand sewing.

Backyard Flood 2012

About once a year our backyard floods.  Serious flooding.  I have pictures from the 2009 flood, and the relatively mild 2010 flood that broke the fence.  No flood last year because there was no rain.

So, I gve you our flooding for this year.  By the end of the night the river had died down to some puddles, but for that hour or so we played outside it was a nice river.

Now, what isn’t obvious from this is the quick moving current in there, which led to many experiments.  I have science posts for a couple of weeks from this

 

We made the trek over to discover it’s about knee high on me.  The broken fence you see if from a previous flooding.  The kids have been slowly demolishing it and using it for projects.

Princess spent time changing outfits, first her dress, then shorts, but those got wet, so finally she just changed into her swimsuit.

Meanwhile the boys played and chased Mac, and just had a lot of fun.

Science Sunday: Florida and Disney World

 

During the summer I’m doing some things with my kids for geography that we couldn’t necessarily do during our geography co-op.  This was definitely one of those times.
We read Disney World (Going Places) and it certainly made my kids want to go.  They’re already planning where they want to go.
 
So, then I had to redirect them to our activity.  Making a roller coaster ride.

We then spent the next 30 minutes fine-tuning and messing about with toilet paper rolls, tape, and random pieces of paper trying to make sure the marbles made it all the way to the end.

The first few times we tried the marbles went flying off into who knows where (over a week later I’m still finding marbles, it’s kind of sad).

That being said, this is not the activity to do with little kids.  Marbles are popping up all over.

But, we did learn a few things from this:

1.  If there is nothing to stop the marbles they will keep going, so we needed to add “back stops” for lack of a better word.
2.  Sometimes the tubes needed extra support, so we had to go back in and add extra tape.
3.  Different sized marbles acted different ways.
4.  Have something to catch the marbles at the bottom.

Afterwards we talked about what it must be like for the people designing these rides, because if that had been people on our ride we would have been in a lot of trouble.  The designers have to put a lot more thought and care into their work than we did.

Journey to Excellence shared about a fun field trip to Bass Pro Shop.  I need to check and see if my local one has event like this.  It’s also a good reminder to try stores for field trips.
