If you don’t hear from me much this week, or part of next, here’s why

To do before Friday:

006 007

Finish doll, pretty much done, just need to wrap

Finish fishing pole game, will post about that completely later, and then wrap it, just need to seal it so it can get wet.

To do before Saturday:

005 002 003 004

Finish cutting out freezer paper squares, finish cutting out fabric squares, iron freezer paper to squares and get fabric markers for people to sign squares

Finish the boys’ vests, they are sure they NEED these.  Mostly done with one, just have to slip stitch side seams closed, and then put on snaps.  Other still needs fashion fabric sewn to lining.

And because it makes me feel happier, the red and green is a little clutch for me to hold my pens and pencils for drawing.

Why does all of this have to be done by those days.  Friday is the birthday party, 4 year olds don’t really understand not getting presents.

Saturday:  My Mommy’s getting married (you have to imagine the sing song voice).  Okay now to go look for boots and meet her for lunch.

Our favorite math game right now!

I kid you not.  I first discovered this game when my boys were playing it obsessively in Jump Start, and they kept playing it but doing it wrong, so they wouldn’t get points.  I tried explaining how to play it on the computer, and then watched as they kept playing and playing, and I started to dream of how I could make this wonderful game, and they’d play it for hours and call me the most wonderful Mommy ever.  Then I realized I didn’t have to, and I already have it all set up to play the game.  Lots of time and effort saved.

What is this game you say?  Well, I’m glad you asked.

001

It’s our brand new calendar game, which is much more effective than trying to do it every day.  I pull out random cards from the board and they have to put them back in the right places.  And mysteriously enough I always pull out enough cards so everyone gets the same number of cards, however could that be?

I pull out 3 days of the week, and about 12 or so of the number cards, and have them put the cards back in order as we get to the number.

The kids are LOVING this!  They really really love it!

I’m linking this up to Joyful Learner Math Monday, and ABC and 123 Show and Tell on Tuesday.  Both of which have buttons, which I’ve been bad about remembering to grab, I will soon.

Art Box: creativity of Batman

So, Batman is an interesting guy.  He likes to create, and by create I quite often mean destroy, but we’ll pretend he creates.
041

First I give you his map.  This has been proudly displayed in his room for about a month.  It’s the first thing he created he wanted to hang up.  He says the brown stuff is water, the green fabric is land, and the yarn is a boat.  And the guy up at the top is up in heaven.  The map is how to get to heaven.  Or, I think that’s what he said, he’s changed his answer a couple of times.

045
I think this is a trap.  That’s my best guess.  I found this.  Batman is why I can’t leave pipecleaners or anything really out where they can be found.  He takes it and makes stuff.  Usually traps.  This evening I walked them up to go to bed, and I discovered Buzz Lightyear hanging from the doorknob by his arm with about 5 or 6 pipecleaners wrapped around him.  It cracks me up.

010

This is Superman.  I am sure you recognize him by his belt around his “waist.”  I guess if his arms are that far down that kind of has to be his waist, but still…….  This is pretty much the way he goes on all projects.  He gets it in his mind on how he’s going to do it, and then he goes.  He doesn’t really care if that’s what the directions are or not, that is his plan.  Don’t mess with my plan Mom.  And I don’t.  It’s not safe to.

So, that is Batman’s contribution to the Art Box this week.  Head on over to Nicole at Tired, Need Sleep to see some more kid led creations.  Truthfully I couldn’t come up with the things this boy comes up with.

Homemade explosives, okay not exactly

I wanted to start this off by showing you all these movie clips of people who’ve claimed to “invent gun powder,” and then the silly uses they put it to in the movies.  Offhand I remembered Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, where they use it to distract the Sherriff.  And, the horrid movie Scorpion King where there’s some crazy inventor who is being held prisoner by the bad guy and he invents it, and they use it to escape somehow.  I know there’s a lot of others.  And it cracks me up/annoys me every time.

However, that was not going to happen without my taking a long time to watch through lots of clips labeled Robin Hood 5, or 12, and while I enjoy the movie.  If I want to write more than one post this week I can’t do that.  So, I guess I’ll just tell you about what we did.

Important note: I have learned there really is a reason they tell you to wear safety goggles when doing experiments.  I was always somewhat mocking of those warning, especially for simple little experiments, and then I did this:

So, that is what not to do.  My boys think that was hilarious and kept trying to get me to do it again.  Yeah, so not happening, it was rather painful.  I got lots of sympathy comments on Facebook, and was even told I got a free chemical peel facial doing that, still……..

Here’s when it went right:

Now to the science of this.  What you are doing is taking a bottle full of vinegar, and then adding a piece of napkin of toilet paper filled with baking soda and then stuffing a cork into it somewhat tight so the gas produced from the chemical reaction will force the cork to go out.  This is the same reason that when we do baking soda and vinegar volcanoes you get this foam that overflows the cup.

Things I learned in our 5 or 6 failures:

1.  Don’t put the cork on too tight, it needs to be tight, but not too tight.

2.  I think a normal water bottle would have worked better, think the soda bottle cap width.  Beggars can’t be choosers, and a friend was nice enough to give us a water bottle from her recycle bin.

3.  Make sure you have enough supplies to do it several times.  Either because it didn’t work the first few times, or because the kids want to do it “Again, again!”

4.  Wear safety goggles, and don’t lean over when the chemical reaction is still going on.

5.  Be aware of your current weather.  I had another explosion I was going to do, and had bought most of the supplies for, but one I had bought them, it became too windy for me to want to experiment with shooting matches.

I think Almost Unschoolers has done this before, or I remember watching a video of vinegar and baking soda overflowing in their backyard.  I know I first learned about this back when it was an object lesson for our Sunday School class.  I don’t remember what we were teaching the kids, but I know the class full of boys loved it and each had to take a turn at it.

So, has anyone else injured themselves for a science experiment?  I was just glad it wasn’t too serious, it just stung for a couple of hours.

As always, add up your science related post.  It doesn’t have to be an experiment, it could be a cool new book, a nature walk, whatever you did or found for science this week.
